The Way Out of Career Dilemma

I often get emails from people who have heard or read about my drastic career change and they contact me for advice regarding their own career dilemma. They are either struggling between choosing a “sensible” career and one that makes their heart sing, or else they are in a career that’s slowly sucking the life blood out of them. Either way they feel stuck, and they reach out to me for guidance. I know what that feels like – to wake up every day dreading the work day ahead; to feel alone and unable to speak to your colleagues about your struggle; and to feel as if there is no way out. There is a way out. We all know where we want to be. We may not be able to attach a job description to it or summarize it in a 30-second elevator pitch, but we feel it. There is an inner place in all of us that feels like home – where there’s nothing to hide,...

10 Quotes to Get You Unstuck

The first quarter of the year is nearly done and it’s a good time to take a look at how you are doing on your goals for the year. If you’re flying – great! Keep going. But if you are feeling stuck and wondering if this is going to be another year of unfulfilled expectations, then the following list of quotes may be just what you need to get back on track. I love a great quote, and I compiled the list below to help you to get unstuck. Enjoy! “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald. Everybody fails at something at some point in their lives. Never let failure be the reason you stop trying. Learn to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and give it another go. “Thankfully, dreams can change. If we’d all stuck with our first dream, the world would be overrun with cowboys and princesses.” – Stephen Colbert. Sometimes feeling stuck is an indication to change direction. Stop hitting...

The Right Time to Quit

We’ve all seen the quote on social media: “Winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win.” It rolls off the tongue easily and has some elements of truth, but it’s also very simplistic. Because quitting can be one of the most powerful decisions you ever make. I suspect the fear of being labeled a “loser” is what keeps many people stuck in careers, relationships and circumstances which disempower them. Many of us were brought up to believe that you hang in there, no matter what. Unfortunately this kind of thinking has the potential to rob us of vitality and we risk missing out on opportunities to explore fresh ways to make our mark on the world. When I left medical practice in 2004 I was making the most difficult decision of my professional life. I had worked hard to qualify as a doctor and to realise my childhood dream. But I also realised that working in that environment was depleting my energy reserves and in turn negatively impacting the effectiveness...

How to Go From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

I’ve been facilitating a leadership course for young African leaders for the last two weeks, and the programme has been packed with content to help the young leaders to navigate their journeys as they address the challenges facing the African continent. We have brought in expert speakers to address them, taken them on excursions, spent a lot of time on reflection, and created a space for them to build alliances and networks. One thing is certain – leadership is complex. It would be comforting to think that leading is about identifying your desired outcome, figuring out how to achieve it and who to work with, and then leading the charge as you guide others in achieving that envisioned future. The truth couldn’t be further from this ideal. Instead of a straight line from objective to outcome, the path a leader must travel is more like wading through a jungle of compromises, protracted negotiations, uncertain alliances and failed expectations. These challenges are not limited to positions of leadership. The road...

Skyrocket Your Productivity

Do you sometimes wonder how some people seem to get so much done? How do they do it? Where do they get the time? The truth is we are all given the same 24 hours in a day, and it’s up to us to use them productively… or not. The people who produce massive results, churning out phenomenal volumes of work, have simply learned to work more efficiently and effectively with the time they have. At the beginning of the year I promised myself that I would share my message more widely and more frequently, using the various social media platforms available. At first I didn’t know how I would produce the amount of work I intended to share, given the fact that my schedule was already filled with speaking engagements and workshops, not to mention my responsibilities as a wife and mother. I’ve made massive strides in my writing productivity in this first quarter of the year, and I’ve learned valuable lessons about how to carve out...
