How to Prepare for Career Change

In 2003 I decided I wanted to leave medical practice for good. I didn’t arrive at that decision easily, but once my mind was made up I had to make plans to start a new working life. I was faced with a major challenge: I didn’t know how to be anything other than a doctor! How would I make the transition when I wasn’t trained for anything else? I think this is one of the main reasons people stay stuck in unfulfilling jobs and careers – the prospect of having to start from scratch, and the sense of having wasted the skills and experience they have acquired. Nothing is ever wasted. A career change, as challenging as it can be, represents an opportunity to use the skills and experience you already have to build a different career path. There is no way that I could have written about my adventures in medicine – and made a difference in the lives of doctors who face similar challenges – if I...

How to Turn Your Wounds Into Wisdom

We are all wounded in some way; it’s part of the human experience. But our wounds needn’t cause us to suffer. In fact they can even help us to become better versions of ourselves, provided we are willing to learn the lessons they offer and become wiser in the process. Here’s how you can turn your wounds into wisdom: Consider that everything that happens TO you actually happens FOR you. Learn the lessons available from the difficult experiences. Forgive yourself and others. Holding on to resentment, regret and anger perpetuates the suffering. Share your story. It may help others who are going through similar experiences. Share...

How to Find Your Purpose

There comes a time when we all ask ourselves two fundamental questions: Who am I? Why am I here? There is a yearning in the human heart for a life of purpose. Otherwise, what’s the point? In trying to answer these questions people often embark on a quest to “find” their purpose. What they don’t realise is that your life purpose doesn’t need to be found; it’s already there, it just needs to be uncovered. But if it’s already there, why do so many people struggle to live their lives on purpose? It’s not surprising that people find themselves feeling lost, not knowing who they are or where they are going. We are constantly bombarded by stories and images that tell us what we should look like, what to believe, and how much money we ought to have in our bank accounts. This is on top of what we were taught at home and at school about what is acceptable and lovable. Is it any wonder that so many...

The Gift of Failure

Failure is an F-word, so we prefer not to talk about it much. And on the rare occasions when we do discuss it we do so in hushed tones and burden it with all sorts of negative connotations. But what if failure is a gift? Here’s how failing to get my first novel published was a tremendously valuable gift to me: Remember: Failure is an opportunity to learn, grow and do better next time. In the process of reaching for your dreams you will gain skills, contacts and experience, irrespective of the outcome. Failing also teaches you what you are capable of overcoming. Dare to fail! How to Make Your Dreams Come True

Ask a group of people how they would go about making their dreams come true, and you will get a jumble of um’s, don’t-know’s and semi-coherent sentences. Ask that same group what they would do if success was guaranteed, and you will get a different set of responses altogether, most likely bold ideas, daring moves and perhaps even quirky suggestions. So the difference, then, is not so much that people don’t know HOW to accomplish their goals, it’s that they fear failing in the process. You have a choice about where to focus your attention – on your fears or on the achievement of your goals. You are never guaranteed success – life simply doesn’t work that way. But by daring you may just make your dreams come true, whereas you will get nowhere if you let the fear of failure stop you from even trying. That’s guaranteed. Share...
