How to Figure Out What You Really Want

I don’t know what my passion is. I’m interested in so many things, I don’t know which one to choose? I don’t want to make a decision. What if I get it wrong? Do any of these statements sound familiar? If so, I’m guessing you’ve spent years trying this and that, dabbling here and there, chopping and changing. You’ve probably got a whole host of diverse skills and experiences, but they don’t feel as if they amount to much. You just don’t know what you want! If this is you, then I’ve got great news for you. It might not seem so great at first, but trust me it is. Just stay with me and you’ll see what I mean. Here it is: You’re afraid. That’s right. It’s not that you don’t know what you want. You do know; you’re just afraid. Who am I to want that? I’m not qualified. How on earth am I going to pull that off? I don’t have the time/money/connections. We all have...

The Only New Year’s Resolution You Need to Make

It’s that time of the year when people are going back to work and facing the reality of day-to-day life after the headiness of the festive season. This is also the time when the lofty aspirations we made so enthusiastically on New Year’s Day stare us in the face, demanding our attention. Some of those resolutions might now seem “unrealistic” or even inappropriate. These first few weeks of the year are notorious for spelling the death of countless lofty dreams. If you are already asking yourself how you are going to achieve all that you’ve set out to do this year, here’s a straight-forward resolution that will serve you throughout the year, irrespective of the tasks or challenges you face: To show up as yourself. It may not sound like much. It’s certainly not a grand declaration about making millions or doing a triathlon. However, showing up authentically as ourselves in every situation is probably one of the biggest challenges we face as human beings. After all, showing up...

The Single Biggest Mistake I Made in 2016

I had it all planned out – I would write a weekly blog post, sharing the insights and lessons I’ve learned on my journey to discover who I am, why I’m here and how best I can serve. It started off pretty well. In the first half of the year I stuck to the plan. I had a system going, and I was working it. I even wrote about it to demonstrate how well it was working. And then it started to fall apart. I began to ask myself: What am I doing? Why am I doing it? These are perfectly valid questions to ask. However, they are only valuable if you use the answers to those questions as a guide to make adjustments, and to keep moving forward. I allowed the questions to steer me off track, and I lost the momentum I had built in the first few months of the year. I wrote infrequently and clumsily. Even when I wanted to write, I struggled to find...

Are You Afraid of Your Purpose?

It seems everywhere you turn people are trying to find their purpose. The internet abounds with articles, courses and e-books on the topic. Why is it that so many are still searching? Or could it be that they are looking in all the wrong places? I know that my purpose is to use my life – my story, gifts and talents – to guide and inspire others. I’ve known it for a long time, but it’s only recently that I’ve fully embraced it. I was afraid, and I’m starting to think many people feel the same way too. I spent a lot of time and energy searching. And even when the pieces of my quest started to come together, there was a little voice in my head that said, “Who do you think you are? Who died and put you in charge?” Unfortunately, I believed that voice. I thought that I needed to learn more, to take more courses, get further qualifications… I didn’t believe that my story, my...

You Are The Author of Your Life Story

When I first decided I wanted to write, my first project was a novel. I wrote a quirky story about a somewhat unbalanced woman who was so desperate to get pregnant that she would stop at nothing to make it happen. I loved writing that novel and exercising my creative muscle, and when I submitted the manuscript to editors I fully expected a glowing assessment from them. Not so. The feedback was more like: “the writing has potential, but the story could do with a lot more work.” The editor even suggested I make the main character go completely off the rails and get herself into outrageous amounts of trouble. At first I thought, “She can’t do that!” And then I had a revelation: I could make her do whatever I wanted her to do! This was my story, and how far I wanted it to go was limited entirely by what my imagination would allow. The same principle applies in real life. As children we were taught what’s...
